TREE PLANTING IN ESSEN / GERMANY

TREE PLANTING IN ESSEN / FOREST VILLAGE OEFTE

North of the Oefter Tal nature reserve lies the Oefte forest site. The mixed forest consisting of various deciduous tree species was severely damaged on a partial area by the storm depression “ELA” in 2014. On an area of about two hectares (20,000 square meters), an old beech stand of about 200 years was completely destroyed. The remaining beech trees died in the following years due to the hot and dry summers. Instead of a natural regeneration of beech, maple, birch, willow or poplar, the area is now dominated by blackberry and holly (Ilex). Both species grow very rapidly and overgrow or darken other woody plants, so that the area will not reforest itself in the long term.
The area is now to be reforested in the fall/winter of 2021/2022 with site-appropriate sessile oak, beech and bird cherry.
